BIRTHDAY POEM
For Robert Greacen

At fifty,I suppose, you'll count the change,
Number your debtors and your creditors,
Adjust accounts, write off lost loves, and put
The reckoning in your diary. But,or yet,

You'll also scatter starling glances over
A set shrugged shoulder soldiering through time
Back to a tenser time when, unbereft,
Life was right and politics were left.
