This is Sadie. Sadie, this is my fatner's brother.\"\n\nUncle Albert leaned over to take Sadie's hand. \"Pleased to meet\nyou, Sadie.\"\n\n\"How do you/do, Mr McCoy?\"\n\n\"Are you getting in then, the two of you?\"\n\n\"We'll get in the back,\" said Kevin.\n\n\"And then you can have a wee cuddle, eh?\" Uncle Albert chuckled.\n\nSadie giggled. She thought Uncle Albert might well be to her\nliking. Kevin tugged open the back door and they slid on to the\nback seat. They sank into the middle of it. The springs had gone a long time ago.\n\n\"You'll need to tie up the doorhandle, Kevin, said Ucnle Albert. \"tThe\ndoor's inclined to fly opencatch is busted. I wouldn't be wanting you to fall out\non a corner.\"\n\nKevin tied up the handle with the piece of string dangling from it,\nand settled back with his arm round Sadie.\n\n\"Right, we're off!\" Uncle Albert pulled the starter. Nothing\nhappened. They\nmoved off by inches, gradually gathering a little more speed, and\nthen with a splutter the car sprang to life again.\n\nUncle Albert slackened speed so that Kevin could catch them up.\nHe got in to the car panting.\n\n\"We'll be all right now,\" said Uncle Albert. \"Once it gets going\nthere's nothing to worry about.\" They chugged along slowly., being\novertaken by anything else that was on the road. \"There's life in the\nould thing yet, Kevin.. I always get there in the end.\"\n\n\"Been in Bangor, Uncle Albert?\"\n\n\"I was seeing a man about a greyhound. Fine beast. I was tempted.\nBut the missus'd have given me hell if I'd brought it back.\"\n\nKevin laughed, imagining the torrent of words Uncle Albert's wife\nwould have poured out if he had returned with a dog.\n\n\"Haven't seen you before, have I x Sadie?\" Uncle Albert half\ntunred to have another look at Sadie. In the darkness. The car swerved\nslightly.\n\n\"Keep your eyes on the road, for dear sake, Uncle Albert. You\nnearly had us in the ditch.\"\n\n\"Have you been keeping her hidden, Kevin? Sadie was enjoying herself.\nShe liked the unexpected, missing the last bus, getting a lift in a\nfunny old car. Tommy led such a dull, predictable life, going for\nwalks with Linda, taking her to the cinema. They had the odd tiff\nbut even they were dull and predicatble: Linda would go off in to the\nsulks and come out of them when she saw that she mgiht be on the\nverge of losing Tommy.\n\nKevin sniffed. \"You don't smell brunigg rubber, do you?\"\n\n\"Burning rubber?\" said Uncle Albert. \"You're imagining things.\nSure anyway there's always a bit of a smell in this ould car. What\nelse could you expect with the age she is?\"\n\n\"It's just as well they don't have those Ministry of Transport\ntests over here the way they do in  England. You'd never get it\nthrough.\"\n\n\"Tests!\" scoffed Uncle Albert. \"I wouldn't have anything to do\nwith them. Never sat an exam in my life. Always mitched on the day\nthey had them. Not like your da, Kev. He was a serious scholar.\"\n\n\"It hadn't got him very far, thought Kevin, working on a building\nsite, but then he had had to leave school to help support his family.\nJust as he had had to do. He and hsi father were both eldest sons.\n\nSddie sniffed. Kevin lifted up the\nbonnet and a cloud of steam gushed up in to the air.\n\n\"Bless us!\" said Uncle Albert, scratching his head. \"What the devil's the matter with that then?\"\n\n\"When did you last put water in?\" asked Kevin.\n\n\"Only yestreday. \"\n\n\"Looks like you'reyour thermostat might be away.\"\n\nUncle Albert rested his hands on his hips and shook his head. He\nwas not a member of any motoring organisation, naturally not, and\nhe had not enough money on him to seek help at a garage. He had a\nfriend who would be able to come out from Belfatst the next day and\ntake a look at it for him. Uncle Albert always had friends who could fix things, but in the meantime they would have to abandon\nit. It grieved him to have to leave it lying there on the road so far\nfrom home. He wondered\nthat the police w did not pick him up more often for being in\npossesssion of an unroadworthy m vehichle, but then the police had\nplenty of other things to concern themselves withworry about.\n\n\"Looks like we'll have to walk,\" said Kevin.\n\nSadie walked between them, her arms linked through theirs. The\nsky had cleared and the moon rode high above them lighting their\nway. It was a fine night for a walk, Uncle Albert observed; he had\nwalked home often enough before. And no doubt it would not be the\nlast time, Kevin added. Uncle Albert broke into song, and Kevin and\nSadie joined in.\n\nAfter they had gone a mile or two they saw the lights ahead of\na parked truck.\n\n\"Looks like an army check point,\" said Kevin.\n\nWhen they drew near they saw two soldiers standing in front of the\ntruck, rifles held loosely in their hands. I went to see a man about a greyhound.\u201d\n\n\u201dO.K. then, on you go.\u201d\n\n\"Trouble, son?\u201d\n\n\"Army car blown up on one of the side roads,\u201d said the soldier\nshortly. \"Landmines.\u201d\n\nUncle Albert tutted. \u2019\u2019Nobody hurt I hope?\u201d\n\n\"The driver was killed.\u201d\n\nSadie, Kevin and Uncle Albert walked on in/silence for a way. And\nthen Uncle Albert said,\"Well, if they will come over here they have\nto expect trouble.\u201d\n\n\"But,\u201d began Sadiie, and then stopped as Kevin dug her in the ribs\nShe knew he was right: there was no point in arguing with Uncle a\nAlbert.\n\n\"It\u2019s not that I'm for gettin xxx people getting killed,\u201d said\nUncle Albert. \"And some of them soldiers are just boys.\" He sighed.\n\"I don't know why we can't get a bit of peace.\"\n\nThey did not sing any more. They walked more briskly, eating\nup the miles, until they saw the lights of Belfast ahead. They\ntramped through the quiet sleeping suburbs, their feet ringing out\nin the silencequietnessAnd thenAfter the suburbs they came to the\narea of the rows and rows of streets of little red-brick terraced\nhouses, running parallel, each one almost identical.
