The long day behind the shop counter bored her. It was time\nshe was looking for another job. Her mother would blow her head\noff if she came home saying that. She was always changing jobs.\nThree in the last year, and each one more ~~tiresome~~ boring than the last.\nBut she forgot about them now for it was a fine ~~spring~~ summer evening.\n\nShe crossed with the crowd over the busy street to the City hall.\nAs she moved along the wide pavement stepped on to the kerb she heard someone call her name.\n\n\"Sadie! Sadie Jackson!\"\nShe looked round. For a moment she could not see who it was\nthat was calling her. The pavement was busythick with people heading\nhomewards. Then she saw him coming through the midst of the throng. Tall, dark, broader than she had\nremembered, but with the same bright spark in his eyes. She waited\nfor him to reach her.\n\n\"Kevin,\" she said. \"Kevin McCoy.\" XXX XXXX\n\n\"It's me all right.\" He was grinning. \u201dI saw you coming a mile\naway.\u201d\n\n\"Haven't seen you for ages. XXX XXXX. It must be nearly three\nyears.\u201d\n\n\u201cDaresaySuppose it is. Funny seeing you again after all this time so long.\u201d\n\nThey only lived a few streets away from one another but it might\nas well have been a few thousand miles. They stood and looked at one another\nand let the hurrying people push t round them.\n\n\"Fancy a cup of coffee?\" asked Kevin. \"Have you time?\"\n\n\"Don't see why not,\" said Sadie. They felt\na little awkward walking together but once inside the cafe, seated\nacross a table from one another, their tongues broke free again.\n\n\"How's Brede?\" she asked.\n\n\"How's Tommy?\" he asked at the same time, and they laughed.\n\n\"3rede's fine,\" he said. \"She's working as a nursery nurse.\"\n\n\"She always was soft on kids, wasn't she? Tommy's in the yard\napprenticed as a welder. \"\n\nXThey were silent for a moment, Sadie thinking of Kevin's sister Brede and\nKevin of Sadie's brother Tommy as each had been three years ago. They had all\nbeen at school still then., different schools. They had started as enemies, had even\nfought with stones and fists; then for x a while they had been friends\nand then theybut eventually had drifted apart because of the difficulties of meeting.\n\n\"And you, Sadie, what are you doing?\"\n\n\"Me?\" She shook her long fair hair back over x her shoulder in a gesture that he remembered. \"Well,\nfirst I went into an office - \" she wrinkled her nose* and then\nI got a job in a linen mill...\"\n\nHe laughed. \"You always were x a restless onex !\"\"\n\n\"Look who's talking!\" They were used to sparring with one\nanother; it came back to them easily.   Sadie settled back completely\nat ease. Sarky as ever aren't you?\"\n\nShe made a face at him. \"I think the scrap business would suit\nyou rightly... roaming the streets and all that.\"\n\n\"The streets aren't the same as they used to be. Plenty scrap\nlying about not what we're looking for.\"\n\nScrap in the streets: burnt-out cars and buses and armoured vehicles,\ntorn-up paving stones, barbed-wire coiled to form barricades. And\nalong the streets went soldiers on patrol with fingers on the triggers\nof their guns, men and women eyeing them watchfully, suspiciously, and\nbands of children playing at fighting and sometimes not just playing.\nSadei and Kevin were quiet. The subject was too difficult to talk\nabout, too difficult for them.\n\n\"It's a dead-end job anyway,\" said Kevin. \"The scrap business. I\nwon't stay in it.\"\n\n\"What'll you do?\"\n\nHe shrugged. \"What are you dojng now? They both looked away and talked instead of Tommy\nand Brede, remembering days spent at the seaside the summer they\nhad all been friends.\n\nWhen they reached the stop, Kevin stood with his back against\nthe stance and looked at Sadie with a smile on his face.\n\n\"You're even better looking than I thought you'd be.\"\n\n\"Thanks very much!\" Sadie tossed her head, but not with anger.\n\n\"At one time I -thought you were going to make an all-in-wrestler.\nDo you remember the night you jumped on me when I slipped?\"\n\n\"How could I forget it? You'd been defacing wrecking our King Billy.\"\n\n\"You could run, I'll say that for you.\"\n\n\"Hello there, Sadie.\"\n\nSadie turned to see that a girl had stopped beside them. I'm glad you don't\nhave to go sit all the way home on the bus with it worrying you.\"\n\nLinda's round little mouth straightened into a taut line. She\nedged away. \"I'll be seeing you, Sadie.\"\n\n\"No doubt.\"\n\nLinda walked away swiftly.\n\n\"She can't get back quick enough to spread the good news in your\nstreet, Sadie,\u201d said Kevin.\n\n\"Let her spread what she likes.\"\n\n\"I always liked the devil in you.\" Kevin grinned. \"You never let them get you down, do you?\"\n\n\"Her bottom bum wiggles just like her mother's ma's. I could see iA that\nhappening startin' three years ago. But then neither of them hawd\never been inclined to shy away from danger. As long as they could\nremember they had always been aware of it.\n\nSadie bounded up the stairs in front of Kevin.
