They do go into these matters very\nseriously indeed. I have been wondering how the adaptation\nof this novel has turned out. I'm sure it is not an easy\nnovel to adapt. I thought it very dull and naive; I don't\nmean politically naive, but naive so far as the art of the\nnovelist is concerned. The characterization seemed to me\nquite rudimentary; the writing quite undistinguished; the\ntechnicalities quite boring; and some of the incidents quite\nfrightening. I must say, however, I approve of this business\nof public criticism. It has its dangers, but on balance must\nbe very healthy. It does prevent literature from being\nesoteric or precious or out of touch. On the other hand\nvox populi is very far from being vox dei.\n\nDid you hear last night the production of The Back Window?\nVery, very good I thought it - I mean the production. As for\nthe play your friend Beckett is going to have a lot to answer\nfor.\n\nTell Amy that I am trying to get her the historical infor-\nmation she requests. I have already asked an historian and\nhe has not yet any definite information about the names. He\nis doubtful, however, that such names have ever been known.\n\nEver\n\nJohn Gibson Esq.,\nDrama Department,\nRothwell House,\nBBC LONDON.\n\nJB/PJ\n","Type":"Text"}}]
